Exercise Dynamic Manta 2019: Maritime Patrol Flights

04 mars 2019 12:13

Synopsis

One of the most effective assets for detecting and countering adversary submarines is a Maritime Patrol Aircraft, or MPA. With their ability to fly far ahead of the fleet, MPAs use towed sonar arrays and sonar buoys to hunt subsurface threats. These specialist aircraft are taking part in an annual NATO submarine hunting exercise called Dynamic Manta 2019. This exercise is taking place in the central Mediterranean Sea. It brings together units and more than 3,000 sailors and airmen from 10 NATO Allies (Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States). Footage includes shots of a Turkish CN-235 MPA preparing for flight, flying and dropping sonar buoys; shots of a German P-3 MPA preparing for flight, flying and conducting anti-submarine operations; and an interview with German Navy Lieutenant Philipp Wollny, tactical coordinator of the P-3.

(05:32) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH): LIEUTENANT PHILIPP WOLLNY, TACTICAL COORDINATOR, GERMAN NAVY
“The primary task is hunting submarines.” 25. (05:53) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH): LIEUTENANT PHILIPP WOLLNY, TACTICAL COORDINATOR, GERMAN NAVY
“We deploy sonar buoys, active and passive buoys. So what the active buoy does is it sends out a ping, or sound, into the water, which gets reflected by a submerged contact, most likely the submarine. And then we can detect this reflection with that buoy, and it gets sent, the signal gets sent into the aircraft, where we then can bring this contact, or this reflection, on the tactical screen, and actually fix that position and we know where the sub is.” 26. (06:06) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH): LIEUTENANT PHILIPP WOLLNY, TACTICAL COORDINATOR, GERMAN NAVY
“The advantage of a maritime patrol aircraft during anti-submarine warfare is that we have the capability to react on changes or on certain situations very quickly. Like, we can deploy sensors, active buoys or passive buoys, in just a short time to focus on high-speed subs, or on low-speed subs, more proactive than a frigate does it.” 27. (06:38) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH): LIEUTENANT PHILIPP WOLLNY, TACTICAL COORDINATOR, GERMAN NAVY
“It feels very great, it is what we’re training, what we have been trained for, and when then you actually find a sub, it just makes your day great.” END
