NATO Exercise Dynamic Manta 2019

27 Feb 2019 14:48

Synopsis

Submarines, with their ability to cruise stealthily beneath the waves, represent a clear challenge to NATO’s maritime forces. In order to keep the seas free and open, NATO practises the complex and demanding mission of anti-submarine warfare, or ASW, through regular exercises. Dynamic Manta 2019 brings together units and more than 3,000 sailors and airmen from 10 Allies (Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States) in the central Mediterranean Sea to simulate the hunt for undersea adversaries. In order to succeed, NATO forces have to use a combination of sea-based, airborne and submarine assets to find and neutralise submarine threats. Footage includes shots of the Italian submarine Scirè underway, shots of Standing NATO Maritime Group Two underway; interior shots of the Spanish submarine ESPS Tramontana; and shots of the Turkish frigate TCG Gelibolu’s sonar room. Plus soundbites from US Navy Commodore Andrew C. Lennon, Commander, Submarines NATO.

“So submarines are inherently stealthy, and that’s the real value that they bring to the fight. And because the adversary doesn’t know where they are, that can add a lot of doubt into the adversary’s mind. Another challenge when it comes to searching for submarines is it’s a very asymmetric problem. In other words, it often takes several assets just to track one submarine.” 29. (05:48) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH): US NAVY REAR ADMIRAL ANDREW C. LENNON, COMMANDER, NATO SUBMARINES
“In exercise Dynamic Manta that we’re hosting right now, in the central Mediterranean Sea, we’re going to be practising finding submarines using a task group consisting of ships, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and other submarines.” 30. (06:04) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH): US NAVY REAR ADMIRAL ANDREW C. LENNON, COMMANDER, NATO SUBMARINES
“Submarines have a wide variety of capabilities, from anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, the ability to launch missiles that can threaten our population centres, critical infrastructures and our nations, so it’s very important for NATO to understand where adversaries’ submarines are.”
