(04:53) SOUNDBITE IN ENGLISH - 1st LIEUTENANT MAXIMILIAN HÖFLER, GERMAN MOUNTAIN INFANTRY BRIGADE “The German Mountain Infantry Brigade is the last mountain infantry brigade in the Bundeswehr. So, the Mountain Infantry Brigade was always part of the Bundeswehr, so we are the ones who are the specialists for mountain warfare. 11. (05:18) SOUNDBITE IN ENGLISH - 1st LIEUTENANT MAXIMILIAN HÖFLER, GERMAN MOUNTAIN INFANTRY BRIGADE “Our task is to supply the troops on narrow paths in the mountains with a lot of weight and many supply goods. So the paths we can walk on, you might, if you’re a good driver, you might drive on them with a motorcycle, or something like that, but you won’t load 120 kilos on a motorcycle. So that’s the reason why we are needed. You might say, then you use a helicopter, but we can work when it’s bad weather and we work under all the conditions.” 12. (05:56) SOUNDBITE IN ENGLISH - 1st LIEUTENANT MAXIMILIAN HÖFLER, GERMAN MOUNTAIN INFANTRY BRIGADE “Our unit is very important for the NATO because whenever there is a mission in the mountains, and this we have seen in Kosovo and in Afghanistan, it’s very important to have the possibility to bring supply to the troops and we are, in our special terrain, we are in the end the best way to bring those supply goods to the troops, because of that in my opinion it’s very important that NATO has this possibility and I think that it will also be important in the future.” 13. (06:43) SOUNDBITE IN ENGLISH - SERGEANT MARIO THIESS, GERMAN MOUNTAIN INFANTRY BRIGADE “In our unit we have a special vet, only for us, for the mules. Also we have now around about 10 blacksmiths. OK, we have in the unit around about 50 mules and 20 riding horses and they have a lot to do, the blacksmiths, and yeah it’s a special job in our unit.” 14. (07:04) SOUNDBITE IN ENGLISH - SERGEANT MARIO THIESS, GERMAN MOUNTAIN INFANTRY BRIGADE “There are different loads, we have sometimes water, something to eat, ammunitions, heavy weapons. If we have a long march and it’s very high and it’s hard for me, then I talk to him and say ‘hey, OK, only a few hundred metres to go, we can do it’, also if I have some problems, if there are no other soldiers anywhere near so I talk also about my problems with the mule.” 15. (07:33) SOUNDBITE IN ENGLISH - SERGEANT MARIO THIESS, GERMAN MOUNTAIN INFANTRY BRIGADE “The mules are strong, they are helpful, they are lovely and they are honest, and if you are good to the mules, the mules will be good to you.”
