Synopsis: On 31 October 2018, a new NATO-led mission in Iraq started its work to further develop Iraq’s security institutions and structures. The new mission, called NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), was launched at the NATO Summit held in Brussels on 11 and 12 July 2018, following a request by the Iraqi government. The mission is led by Major General Dany Fortin of the Canadian Armed Forces, and builds on prior training and capacity-building efforts carried out in the country since January 2017 by NATO civilian and military personnel. The NATO Mission Iraq is designed to further strengthen the Iraqi security forces, by providing technical advice to relevant Iraqi officials in the Ministry of Defence and in the Office of the National Security Adviser and by training and advising Iraqi instructors at national military academies and institutions. Some team members, all the team members are here today and I think you deserve a good hand of applause for the great work you did over the last year. Ladies and gentlemen, this very small team, NTCB-I, set the conditions for a successful NATO mission moving forward, focused on providing strategic advice to applicable security ministries of Iraq... strategic advice and defence education as well as capacity building expertise from ministerial to institutional level.“ 00:01:11 – 00:01:50 SPEECH (Arabic – translated into English by interpreter): LIEUTENANT GENERAL SALAH AH DIN, DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF OF THE IRAQI MINISTRY OF DEFENCE „… and they enabled us to gain victory over ISIL. All good luck to General Giuliano and we wish him all good luck and all success for his future work and I wish him sincere wishes and we also want General Fortin, although he said he had a small team, but we hope that this small team is going to be significant, very big, in supporting the Iraqi Institutions.“ 00:01:50 – 00:02:12 Signing ceremony. JANA KOTOROVA, NATO DEPUTY SENIOR CIVILIAN IN IRAQ „NTCB-I success is based on its approach to training and advising, which is based on the principles of inclusivity and Iraqi ownership. Rather than imposing NATO’s principles on Iraqi system, NTCB-I was listening to Iraqi needs. I just think it’s training according to their requirements and showing some universal NATO principles that Iraqi audiences could adapt and modify into their realities.“ 00:03:37 - 00:03:55 SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) BRIGADIER GENERAL FRANCESCO GIULIANO, OUTGOING NATO SENIOR OFFICER IN IRAQ „ Around NATO is a lot of interest, a lot of curiosity, and I think that one of the commitments, for the tasks of the new mission is to open and to let them understand what really NATO is.“ 00:03:55 – 00:04:52 SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) - MAJOR GENERAL DANY FORTIN, CANADIAN ARMED FORCES, COMMANDER OF THE NEW NATO MISSION IRAQ (NMI) „In the last year particularly, the current team that we are changing over today, has been able to do leaps and bounds in terms of strategic advice in the areas of coordination, civil-military cooperation and a number of train-the-trainer activities that really set the conditions for a larger commitment from the Alliance, a NATO mission in Iraq that has now been set up today. So we are grateful for the great work that they did over the last year and for the previous team as well, fore the previous team’s work, and we are looking forward to engaging with Iraqis and develop this partnership.“ #END#
