When fighter pilots need extra fuel, they turn to air-to-air refuelling tankers, their gas stations in the sky.

Synopsis

For fighter pilots, few sights are as welcome as an air-to-air refuelling tanker. These flying gas stations enable pilots to stay airborne longer, fly further, and perform more complex missions. The European Air Transport Command, in cooperation with NATO, provides this service for Allied fighters.

Footage includes shots of various fighter jets refuelling from French C-130 Hercules transport aircraft and of AWACS aircraft. Some of the shots were supplied by the French and Dutch Defence Ministries.

Four AH1 Wildcat helicopters with the British Army Air Corps No. 659 Squadron have been deployed to Lithuania in support of NATO’s multinational battlegroups in the Baltic states. Designed to serve as a utility, search-and-rescue and light attack helicopter, the Wildcat can fly low, move quickly and get into positions that other aircraft can’t access. This makes them a natural complement to the NATO battlegroups in the Baltic states, where their mobility helps troops manoeuvre around the dense forests. Since deploying in March, the Wildcats have joined several exercises, helping troops from the multinational battlegroups learn how to use the aircraft to their advantage. The Wildcats will fly missions out of Šiauliai Air Base until they redeploy in June. Footage includes shots of Wildcats in flight, and on the tarmac. Interviews include those with British Army Air Corps Captain Kate and Captain Jack from No. 659 Squadron.

British Army Wildcat reconnaissance helicopters on deployment in Lithuania
NATO Allies have been taking part in an exercise hosted among others by NATO’s newest member, North Macedonia. Swift Response 22 is a US Army-led exercise involving paratroopers from various NATO countries. One part of the training saw Italian paratroopers jump out of US C-130 airplanes and land in a field of red poppies. Swift Response 22 runs from 5 to 24 May. Other parts of the exercise are taking place in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland and Slovenia. The footage includes shots of French, Italian and UK troops plus US Chinook and Black Hawk helicopters and C-130 aircraft. It also includes soundbites from Brigadier Nick Cowley, Commander of 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team, British Army.
